What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry includes any dental or periodontal procedure that improves the appearance of your teeth or restores your smile. It can involve making changes to the teeth, the gum tissue, or the jaw bone. Some cosmetic procedures are surgical and others are non-surgical. Crowns, veneers, gum grafting, crown lengthening, bone grafting, and even dental implants are considered to be cosmetic procedures.

Enhancing Your Smile

Are you completely satisfied with your smile? Many patients would like to improve their smile, but they’re not sure how to go about it. Whether you have missing teeth, stained teeth, crooked teeth, gaps, uneven lengths, chips, or other imperfections, cosmetic dental procedures can provide a solution. One or a combination of procedures can improve the appearance of your existing teeth or replace missing teeth with natural looking prosthetics. Enhance your smile with the help of Leading Edge Specialized Dentistry.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dental and periodontal procedures have many benefits:

  • Improve your smile. The ultimate goal of cosmetic procedures is to improve the appearance of your teeth, which gives you a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
  • Improve your overall appearance. Beyond just your smile, cosmetic dentistry can improve your facial structure by regenerating the bone in your jaw.
  • Gain confidence. When you feel better about yourself when you look in the mirror or at pictures of yourself, you gain confidence you may not have had before.
  • Improve your dental and oral health. Many cosmetic procedures also improve your dental and oral health, which is an added benefit.
  • Cover stubborn tooth stains. Some tooth stains can’t be removed with teeth whitening treatments. Veneers can cover stubborn stains on your teeth.
  • Replace missing teeth. Dental implants provide a functional, natural looking replacement for teeth that are missing or can’t be saved.
  • Reshape teeth to be uniform. Veneers can make uneven, crooked, or chipped teeth look uniform.
  • Correct a gummy smile. Crown lengthening removes excess gum tissue to reveal a normal amount of tooth material.
  • Reshape your jaw. Bone loss in the jaw occurs due to missing teeth or severe gum disease. Bone grafting can replace and regenerate this lost bone material.

Procedures Offered

We offer the following cosmetic procedures:

Periodontal Plastic Surgery. Periodontal plastic surgery includes gum grafting (replacing lost gum tissue), bone grafting (regenerating the jaw bone), and crown lengthening (removing excess gum tissue to expose more tooth material).

Crowns. A crown is a protective covering for a tooth that is severely decayed or damaged. The existing tooth enamel is reduced to make room for the crown and the natural root of the tooth stays in place.

Porcelain Veneers. Veneers are thin, shell-like covers that attach to the front side of the teeth. They can cover stains, chips, and uneven teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does bone grafting improve your appearance?

When even one tooth is missing for an extended period of time the jaw bone will weaken and eventually dissolve, leaving noticeable indentations in your jaw line. In cases where multiple or all of the teeth are missing the jaw loses its shape, resulting in a sunken jaw look. Bone grafting strengthens and regenerates the bone to improve the shape of your jaw.

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?

A crown completely covers the existing tooth leaving just the root and a small amount of tooth material. Veneers attach to the front side of the teeth after just a thin layer of enamel is removed. A crown is more often used to improve dental health and veneers are more often used for cosmetic purposes.

Why is it necessary to restore receding gums?

When the gum tissue recedes, or pulls away from the teeth, it leaves them less secure. It also exposes some of the root of the tooth, which can be sensitive to cold or heat. Gum grafting replaces the lost gum tissue to provide better support and protection for your teeth.

Are veneers permanent?

In order to prepare the teeth for veneers, a thin layer of enamel must be removed. The veneers are then cemented into place and can only be removed by us. Over time veneers may wear down and need to be replaced, but once you have been fitted for veneers, your teeth cannot be left uncovered.

Why are dental implants considered to be cosmetic?

Insurance companies consider dental implants to be a cosmetic procedure because they restore your smile, and because they are more expensive than a dental bridge. Your insurance provider would prefer that patients get the least expensive option, which is why they cover bridges but not implants in most cases. However, the quality of dental implants is far superior to that of bridges, so we always recommend implants.

How long does it take to recover from cosmetic dental procedures?

Recovery time depends on the procedure or combination of procedures you have done. For some you may feel fine the next day, for others you may feel normal after about a week. We will provide you with more specific information after we create your treatment plan.
