TMJ Treatment & Orofacial Pain Therapy in Springfield, NJ

Leading Edge Specialized Dentistry provides TMJ treatment & orofacial pain therapy in Melville, NY & Springfield, NJ.

Treatment For TMJ-TMD

If you’ve been suffering from chronic facial pain, a persistent toothache, jaw pain, ear pain, or neck pain that is moderate to unbearable, there’s a good chance you’ve been searching for answers for months – or even years. You may have seen several physicians or dentists and been treated for a variety of ailments. But your symptoms just got worse. If this sounds like you, you are in the right place.

We want you to know we are familiar with your symptoms, we know they are real, and we understand what you’re going through. Best of all, we have many ways to help you start to feel better and get your life back.

BOTOX®

First-line therapies such as meditation, exercises, oral appliances, dietary changes, and physical therapy do the trick for most people. However, a small percentage of people do not respond to first-line treatments, and that’s where TMJ treatment with BOTOX® comes in.

If your symptoms are persistent, BOTOX® for TMJ may be an option. The relief it has provided for so many of our patients is nothing short of remarkable.

Oral Appliances

Oral appliances for TMJ (also called TMJ mouthguards) are used to address a variety of problems, such as:

  • Tooth clenching and grinding at night (sleep bruxism)
  • Morning symptoms such as headaches in your temples, lockjaw, jaw muscle pain, and sore and sensitive teeth
  • Snoring and more serious sleep breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea
  • Daytime jaw over-use behaviors

Our practice philosophy is to get to know you as a person, not just as a patient, so we can get to the bottom of what’s causing your problem. Your symptoms are familiar to us, and we are dedicated to helping you get better. We’ve helped thousands of people by providing the correct diagnosis and care plan, often using oral appliances for TMJ.

Therapeutic Injections

Depending upon your diagnosis, medical and dental history, the nature of your pain, and our examination, we may recommend trigger point injections for TMJ, dry needling, BOTOX®, prolotherapy, or steroid injections.

Trigger point injections for TMJ can help reduce pain, TMJ headaches, and neck pain for many patients. When you get a trigger point injection the benefit is achieved through the mechanical prodding of the muscle and the local anesthetic that is commonly used.

Medications

While TMJ medications will not cure your problem, they can assist tissue healing and make you feel more comfortable while we work together to reduce the risk factors that got your jaw in trouble in the first place.

Depending on your medical and dental history, your symptoms, and what we discover during your examination, medications for TMJ may be part of the treatment plan we design for you. If you are tired of suffering, you’re in the right place. We are familiar with your symptoms and have many treatment strategies to help you feel better.

Relaxation Techniques

Much evidence suggests there is a strong link between TMJ problems and stress. Stressful events over which you have no control can wreak havoc on your emotions – and your body.

And it may be the culprit if you have jaw pain, facial pain, unexplained headaches, or a persistent toothache.

Depending upon the nature and cause of your problem, there’s a good chance that relaxation techniques for TMJ will be part of your treatment plan here.

Jaw Exercises

If you have TMJ symptoms, there’s a good chance you’ve been suffering for a long time. You may have severe pain in your jaw or face every day. Or, perhaps your jaw sticks open in the mornings, or you have trouble eating certain foods. Maybe you have headaches that can’t be explained; or a persistent toothache that so far is undiagnosable. For many of our patients, jaw exercises for TMJ are very effective for pain reduction and healing.

When your jaw muscles are tense or in spasm, it’s often the result of teeth clenching or grinding. Jaw exercises that stretch the muscles will encourage your muscles to loosen up.

Stretching exercises for TMJ also can help to repair your jaw joints by increasing their range of motion allowing them to heal.
